Music & Family

    Hello,

This week, I interviewed my dad and got his input on what music is meaningful to him. I started off by asking him his favorite genre of music. He said, "Bluegrass." This was not surprising to me at all. When I was in my mom's belly and just born, my dad was actually in a bluegrass band. I then asked his favorite artist, to which he answered "The Del McCoury Band". I'd never heard of this band, but when he played a little of their music once again, I knew it was something he'd like. Then I asked what his favorite song was, and he replied, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," which is by The Del McCoury Band. I've inserted the song here!

Next, I asked my dad which instrument he knew how to play. I'm of course aware of all the instruments that hes owned and we've had in our house over the years, but these are the ones that he is confident in his ability to play "I can play the upright bass (which he played in the bluegrass band), guitar and a little bit of banjo" It was always fun growing up and listenting to my dad play the guitar or even bring out the banjo and try and teach me how to play.

Then I asked my dad how he grew up listening to music over the course of his life. He said, "On the radio, or on a record player, an 8-track, and then a cassette, and then a CD." I then followed that up with the question, How important was music to you growing up, and how important is it now? He answered, It's always been very important to him. It is probably more important to him now as an adult than it was as a child, but he really enjoyed it as a child, too!

Lastly, I asked him about some concerts. What was his first concert? was what I asked first, and he answered "The B-52s." Here is an example of one of their songs that hopefully most people know.

Then I asked him what his favorite concert was that he'd ever been to. His answer was exactly what I thought it would be, and that is The Foo Fighters concert at Fenway Park. For those of you who don't know, Fenway is a baseball stadium for the Boston Red Sox and a very cool place to have a rock concert. Here is a video I found of the concert my dad went to!

I hope you enjoyed my Blog this week, Thanks for reading!

  1. Great post, Kilee! I enjoyed reading about your story of "Music and Family Traditions." I have actually never heard of any of these songs but I am glad I listened them! They are really cool. Your dad's choice of instruments are really good also. Overall, great post and I really enjoyed listening to the songs!

  2. Hey Kilee! Your blog was great! When I first read that your dad's favorite genre was bluegrass I was a little struck because I realized I have not heard that in a LONG time. So, naturally I played the video you provided and I actually was pleasantly surprised, and I really liked it! Also the fact that your dad can play the banjo—even just a little bit, that's SO cool! When you asked him about how he listened to music over the course of his life and he said, "one the radio, or on a record player, an 8-track, and then a cassette, and then a CD" I thought this was so funny because my mother had about the same listening styles throughout her life! When I saw that his first concert was "The B-52s", I instantly thought of the Love Shack song and I LOVE that song, truly gives me some memories from growing up! Your dad seems like such a cool person, and he has great music taste!

  3. Hi Kilee!! I loved reading your blog. I also grew up listening to my dad play music because he was, and still is, in a band too. I really like the song by The B-52's because my mom used to play it in the car all the time. Also, your dad is so lucky for getting to see Foo Fighters!! I love their music and would absolutely love to see them in concert.

  4. Hi Kilee! To be honest, I had never heard any of these songs or even that genre of music before, but I really enjoyed discovering them! I also really liked the fact that you roughly knew what your dad’s answer to your question would be!
